Ch. 15
Ch. 16
Ch. 17

Important Passages:
(List at least one important passage from the reading you did for today. Talk about the significance of this passage.)

Focus Questions:
(Discuss the questions below. Record your discussion for question 1 and at least two additional questions.)

You MUST answer this question:
1. Gothic novels take place in gloomy or eerie settings, such as old castles or dark mansions, and emphasize horror, mystery, violence, and the supernatural. Gothic novels, read mainly for entertainment, were especially popular in England in the early 1800s. While Frankenstein is sometimes considered the first science fiction novel rather than a gothic novel, it certainly contains gothic features. What gothic features have you noticed so far? Spend a few minutes visiting this site:
http://www.virtualsalt.com/gothic.htm, and then record your discussion.

Record your discussion for at least two of the following:

1. In chapter 15, what does the monster learn about, question, and not understand from the three books he reads. Discuss each book.

2. As the monster learns and gains more knowledge, how does he feel about himself? What does he want to do? What holds him back? How could gaining more knowledge about something have similar consequences in your own life?

3. Describe the monster’s emotions in chapter 16. What does he set out to do? At this point in the book, discuss your feelings toward Victor and the monster. When and for whom do you feel pity? Discuss Victor’s decision to leave the monster in the first place.

4. Discuss the use of fire so far in the book. When has the monster encountered fire? What has he learned about it? How has he helped and hurt the De Laceys related to fire? How is fire both creative and destructive? How does the monster have “fire” on the inside?

5. Discuss the monster’s arguments for Victor to create a female companion. Discuss Victor’s arguments against it. Why does Victor ultimately agree? What do you think about this decision? How have their roles reversed because of the monster’s revenge?

Extra Time – Discussion Notes:
(Record any additional discussion. What did you find most interesting? Did you disagree about anything? Was something important realized? What literary terms did you discuss? What do you think about the characters and their actions? ETC…)

Discuss the sticky notes your group members wrote for today.

Important Events:
Chapter 15: The creature goes to talk to De Lacey, but then is violently blugeoned with a stick.

Chapter 16: The creature saves a little girl from drowning in a creek, and he is shot because of it.

Chapter 17: The creature asks Frankenstein to create a female companion for the creature.

Impotant Passage: "I will revenge my injuries; if I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear, and chiefly towards you my arch-enemy, because my creator, do I swear inextinguishable hatred." pg. 148

1. There is a creepy attic for the creation of the monster, intricate architecture, menacing forests, and murder abounds.

2. The creature realizes he is ugly and unwanted in the world. The books make him feel inadequate, and makes him want to be accepted by society. His past experiences have held him back from interacting with the rest of the world. Ignorance is bliss, but knowledge is power!...And knowledge also has a crippling effect in that it isolates one from the world.

4. The creature learns that fire burns, but also makes food more edible and produces light and warmth. The creature helps the family by bringing them wood to burn, then burns their house down when rejected violently.

Important events:
Ch. 15 The monster feels very alone, he talks to the old man, then the rest of the people see him and the son beats him up while the sister feints, the family moves away from the cottage,
Ch. 16 then the monster burns the cottage, he saves a girl from drowning, goes to Geneva, then he kills William, then he found Justine sleeping in the barn and placed the picture in her pocket,
Ch. 17 the monster tells Frankenstein to make another monster for him to be friends with, he will go live in South America if he makes another monster for the monster, then Frankenstein agrees to do it, then Frankenstein goes back home

Important passages: “what I ask of you is reasonable and moderate; I demand a creature of another sex, but as hideous as myself; the gratification is small, but it is all that I can receive, and it shall content me.” (148)

“I will revenge my injuries; if I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear, chiefly toward you my arch-enemy, because my creator, do I swear inextinguishable hatred.” (148)

Focus Questions:
All the people in the novel that die make the story very depressing and gothic. Also the monster is supernatural. The story also takes place in graveyards and other eerie places.

2. As the monster learns he feels even worse about himself because he can see how hideous he is. He knows that the people will never accept him. He wants to meet the family that he cares about but he is afraid of rejection. When you gain more knowledge you don’t know what the consequences will be.

3. The monster feels angry and rejected. He has a grudge about all humans, and especially his creator. He sets out to find his creator and to get revenge. I love the monster and dislike victor. I feel pity for the monster whom victor abandoned to grow up alone without anyone to befriend him.

• This is showing that no body will ever accept the monster

Important Events:

• Monster visits DeLacey
• Gets thrown out of the house by the family
• Saves a girl that fell in a river
• Gets shot by girl’s companion
• Kills William
• Takes picture of William and puts the blame on Justine
• Begs Frankenstein for a companion

Important Passage:
“I swear to you, by the earth which I inhabit, and by you that you made me, that with the companion you bestow I will quit the neighborhood of man and dwell, as it may chance, in the most savage of places. My evil passions will have fled, for I shall meet with sympathy.
Focus Questions:

1. Gothic novels …
Answer: We agree that most of the book’s setting is macabre in attitude. Victor Frankenstein’s castle and lab are very gothic in the way that they are described. The fact that the monster can’t find any love is dark in spirit – overall depressing feel of the book. If the weather is described as nice, it’ll usually take a turn for the worse.

4. Discuss the use of fire so far in the book. When has the monster encountered fire? What has he learned about it? How has he helped and hurt the De Laceys related to fire? How is fire both creative and destructive? How does the monster have “fire” on the inside?
Answer: One of the monster’s first earthly experiences – he enjoys the light and the warmth, but burns himself when he gets too close. This is a staple symbol of the monster’s education. The monster leaves firewood on their doorstep to help the De Laceys. His internal “fire” or hatred for his creator caused him to kill William.

5. Discuss the monster’s arguments for Victor to create a female companion. Discuss Victor’s arguments against it. Why does Victor ultimately agree? What do you think about this decision? How have their roles reversed because of the monster’s revenge?
Answer: If he had a female companion the monster would be happier, gentler, and less violent. Victor argues against it by saying that the monster would just come back to seek more happiness eventually. Victor ends up empathizing with the monster, and our group agrees with Victor, because we too feel sorry for the monster’s situation. The roles have reversed, because now if Victor doesn’t make the monster a companion, the monster will simply go and kill more people, and putting more guilt on Victor.

Important Events;
• The Monster learns to read and he finds a back pack full of books.
• He tries to befriend the people in the cottage but they drive him away
• He swears revenge on all human beings
• The monster kills William and frames Justine
• He convinces victor to make him a female companion
Important Passages;
• “Felix darted forward, and with supernatural force tore me form his father, to whose knees I clung; in struck me violently with a stick.”
• “Hideous monster! Let me go. My papa is a syndic he is m. Frankenstein—he will punish you. You dare not keep me.”
• “Frankenstein! You belong then to my enemy- to him towards whom I have sworn eternal revenge; you shall be my first victim.”
Discussion Questions;
1. The Gothic elements we have noticed in Frankenstein are Atmosphere of mystery and suspense, high emotion and unexplainable events such as the creation of the monster.
2. The monster wants to be like the humans but he learns that he is not like the other people and is shunned. He is frustrated by this, soon his frustration turns to malice
5. The monster wants a female companion so as not to be alone in the world but Victor does not want to create another creature. Victor finally agrees because he realizes that creating the monster to be alone was unfair and the creature has suffered enough because of him. We think that he should create female monster to be his companion because no one deserves to be alone in the world
