Important Events:
-Elizabeth is adopted.
-Victor shows interest in natural philosophy.
-Victor’s mother dies.
-Victor goes to college at Ingolstadt.
-He meets with professors and gains interest in chemistry and physiology.
-He begins work on his “monster” and spends years assembling the body.
-Victor brings his creature to life.
-Clerval visits Victor at Ingolstadt and nurses him back to health.
-Henry gives Victor the letter from Elizabeth.
-Victor writes back to Elizabeth.
-Victor receives a letter from his father that says William, Victor’s youngest brother, is dead.

Important Passages:
”Mingled with this horror, I felt the bitterness of a disappointment; dreams that had been my food and pleasant rest for so long a space were now become a hell to me; and the change was so rapid, the overthrow so complete.” (Page 50)
”Learn from me in not by my precepts at least by my example how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge and how much happier than man is who believes his native town to be the world than he who aspires to become greater than his nature allows.” (Page 38)

Focus Questions:

2. Walton wants a friend because he wants someone to talk to on the high seas. He feels that he cannot have an intellectual conversation with anyone around him.

3. Victor believed that he owned Elizabeth. He loved her and they were very good friends. Henry is Victor’s school friend and he comes to Ingolstadt to study Oriental Languages. He helps Victor recover from his labor on the monster and nurses him back to health.

5. Victor’s creation is a human body stitched together. He worked for two years to create a “beautiful” creature with long black hair, pearly white teeth, and yellow eyes. He instantly loathed the creature when he saw it come to life. He hated himself for creating it. He spent the night fearfully lying in his bed and worrying about his actions.

Extra Time – Discussion Notes:
-We feel bad for Frankenstein because he worked for so long and then realized that he hated his creation.
-It is bad for Victor that he can’t kill the monster because he worked so long for it.
-He is being cruel to the monster because he just abandons it.

Victor spent his childhood moving around Europe with his family until they adopted Elizabeth and Victor saw her as his own; they became siblings but their mother meant for them to marry; Henry Clerval is Victor's best friend, he is the son of a merchant, loved enterprise and danger, composed songs, and wrote tales of adventure; he came to Ingolstadt for an education; he stays with Victor and nurses him back to health.

Important Events:
Chapter 1-2:
• Elizabeth was adopted by the Frankenstein family.
• Victor’s father did not stop him from reading the books about bringing creatures to life, which led to Victor’s downfall in the end.
• Victor saw a lightning bolt and was fascinated with it.
Chapter 3-4
• Victor’s mother dies after she catches Scarlet Fever from Elizabeth, but saves Elizabeth in the process.
• Victor goes to Ingolstadt.
• Victor discovers how to make humans live after death.
Chapter 5-6
• The monster lives!
• Henry Clerval arrives and nurses Henry back to health.
• Victor receives a letter form Elizabeth telling him about the family and urges him to write back.
Chapter 7:
• William is murdered.
• Victor returns to his home in Geneva to visit his grieving family.
• On his way, he encounters a huge storm and sees his creation running away. He thinks the monster may be the murderer of William.

Important Passages:

Victor- “After days and nights of incredible labor and fatigue, I succeeded in discovering the cause of the generation and life; nay, more, I became myself capable of bestowing animation upon lifeless matter.” pg. 37.
This is when Victor realizes his dream of creating life can become a reality.

Victor- “ I had desired it with an ardour that far exceeded moderation; but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart.” pg. 48.
We see that Victor feels guilty about his monster and it foreshadows that the monster is capable of causing fear and destruction.

Focus Questions:

3. Victor had a very happy childhood and loved his parents and siblings. Elizabeth is his “cousin.” She was adopted. They are very close to each other and Victor sees Elizabeth as more than a sister. Henry Clerval is his best friend and one of his only friends. He wanted to find Victor and to go to school. He nursed Victor back to health and watched over him. He is a good friend to him.

5. Victor’s creation is proportionally large and he had yellow skin that scarcely covered his muscles. He had long, flowing black hair. He can talk and learns very quickly. Victor spent almost two years working on the monster. Victor felt horrified and scared and ran away. He spent the night in his room trying to sleep, but kept waking up to nightmares and he saw the monster in his room and rushed downstairs. He spent the night wretchedly.

7. Justine Moritz is a girl who was adopted into the family after they saw how badly her mother treated her. When her mother died, the family took her in. She was very loyal to Elizabeth’s aunt and then to the rest of the family when the aunt died. They treated her like one of their own. She is accused for murdering Victor’s little brother, William, because they found the family’s missing picture in her pocket that belonged to William. Victor saw the monster run away when he was on the way to his family’s house. He believes the monster may have been responsible for William’s death and he does not believe that Justine would be capable of killing William because she was always benevolent and so close to the family.

Extra Time – Discussion Notes:
We talked about how it was kind of disappointing that the monster and the book were nothing like the modern-day tales of Frankenstein and how it was confusing that the monster did not have the name “Frankenstein.” We also thought the language the author used is kind of hard to understand.

Page 48
When the creature is created.

• Becomes good friends with Henry Clerval.
• Goes to the Ingolstadt University.

Important Passages:
“No human being could have passed a happier child than myself.”
Explains that Victor had an ideal childhood.
“I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation.”
Explains Victor’s lust for knowledge.

1. Discuss the letters. Who writes them, to whom are they written, and why are they written? What is Walton’s goal in making this trip? What span of time do the letters cover? How do the letters set up a story-within-a-story?
Captain Walton, his sister, because he wanted to keep in touch with his sister, he wanted to explore the arctic regions, several years, Doctor Frankenstein is telling the stories through Walton and his letters.

3. Describe Victor’s childhood and his relationship with Elizabeth. Who is Henry Clerval? Why does he come to Ingolstadt? How does he help Victor? Fantastic and idealistic, and very close, at times…too close to Elizabeth. Henry is his best friend forever (BFF). He goes to Ingolstadt because he was going to college there. He took care of him when he was sick.

5. Discuss Victor’s creation. How long did he work on it? How did he feel when he saw the creature’s eyes open? How did he spend the night? He worked on it for several months, he was terrified, in fear.
